"Where I was, where I am and where I am going."
In March of 2009, as part of my application to Michigan State University's Master of Arts in Educational Technology program I wrote a goal statement. I identified four personal goals relating to my education. I recently revisited those goals to reflect on them and measure my progress toward attaining them. My goals were:
1. to continually work to be the best educated and most knowledgeable person in my field.
2. to break down barriers in education to reach the under-served or left behind learners.
3. to be a leader in adult education, using technology as a tool.
4. to keep pace with technologies used in education.
My education at Michigan State has brought me to new horizons. I have shared my new knowledge and used it to develop new initiatives and solutions within my education center. I researched, proposed, selected and implemented a digital video recording solution to allow learners to experience reflective learning by replaying their clinical simulation scenarios during debriefing sessions. This powerful combination of technology and educational pedagogy brings learning to a new level within our center resulting in deeper understanding and meaningful behavior changes in our learners.
As a result of my MSU experience, I was able to present strong educational rationales which subsequently won me approval to purchase and install SmartBoard interactive whiteboards and student response systems for our classrooms. Our utilization of these new technologies continues to grow and evolve, enhancing our presentations and learner interaction daily. We continually seek out new ways to engage our learners using these new technologies.
While learning at MSU I have built a new computer, transitioned from Windows XP to Windows 7 operating system. I have learned and become proficient with many new programs and technologies. I now use Skype, Windows Live, Camtasia Studio, Jing, Snagit, Adobe Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Audacity, Moodle, Blackboard, Angel, SmartBoards and TurningPoint student response system. I have learned a great deal about learning. I plan to continue my lifelong learning, striving to be the best educated technology leader in my system. This will require dedication, persistence and vigilance on my part. I am sure I am up to the challenge!
I have not made progress in reaching under-served, left behind learners. I commit to use technological advancements along with my skills and abilities to build new programs and breaking down barriers to reach these at-risk learner populations. The challenges are large but the outcomes are great in building up those who face unusual challenges.
Respectfully,
Randall Johann
